  • Prophet Song author Paul Lynch interview

I have listened to many interviews with Paul Lynch since he won the Man Booker Prize.

The questions asked in the interview on Across the Pond allowed the author to speak more openly regarding his book Prophet Song than in any of his other interviews. The interviewer focused on the most important aspects of the novel as well as the intent of the author in writing it. Very insightful interview!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

125. Sarah Hall, "Helm"
Q: What inspired the idea of writing a book about the wind?
The book evolved over time as I reflected on historical narratives and contemporary issues like climate change, ultimately becoming a biography of the wind.
125. Sarah Hall, "Helm"
Q: Have you personally ever experienced Helm?
No, I haven't experienced Helm but it is a powerful wind that can reach hurricane force and is notable for being unique to the Eden Valley.
127. Xiaolu Guo, "Call Me Ishmaelle"
Q: Do you have thoughts on how Herman Melville wrote about identity and how he would feel about these issues?
Identity is a big topic; Moby Dick was one of the first multinational novels dealing with diverse whalers and their interactions.
127. Xiaolu Guo, "Call Me Ishmaelle"
Q: Can you tell our listeners a little bit about Seneca?
I had to recreate a very different captain on board; Seneca is Black and represents a different spirituality inherited from his past.
127. Xiaolu Guo, "Call Me Ishmaelle"
Q: So perhaps we could set the scene, if you could tell us about Moby Dick and how you came to Moby Dick and why you wanted to do a new version of it.
I was not set a goal to retell Moby Dick; my intention was to reimagine what if the central character is a girl with multinational readers.
