「冉求曰く、子の道を説ばざるには非ず。力足らざるなり。子曰く、力足らざる者は中道にして廃む、今汝は画れり。」
冉求が孔子の教えを理解できないのは力が足りないからだと述べたが、孔子は彼が途中で諦めているだけだと指摘した、というお話です。

子曰く、賢なるかな回や、一箪（いったん）の食（し）、一瓢（いっぴょう）の飲（いん）、陋巷（ろうこう）に在り。人はその憂いに堪えず、回はその楽しみを改めず。賢なるかな回や。
孔子は、顔回の質素な生活にも関わらず揺るがぬ幸せを讃えています。彼の賢さとは、外的な環境に左右されず、心の充足を見つけることにあるのです。
