パリで一定の評価を得たシャガールは、革命後の祖国に希望を抱き、故郷ビテブスクへ戻り美術学校の校長に就任する。
しかしそこで待っていたのは、個人の表現よりも「国家に都合のよい芸術」を求める時代の変化だった。
黒い四角に象徴される構成主義の台頭の中で、物語と感情を描くシャガールの絵は次第に居場所を失っていく。
祖国を信じ、教育に尽くした画家は、わずか1年4ヶ月で静かに追放された。この回では、理想と政治がすれ違った瞬間を辿る。
1915年、婚約者ベラに“誕生日”を祝われた瞬間の衝撃を、シャガールは一枚の絵に封じ込めた。
喜びを表すために笑顔も万歳も描かず、ただ宙を舞い、首を捻るその奇妙な表現こそが、祝われたことのなかった男の純粋な幸福だった。
このあまりに私的な絵は、売るつもりもなく描かれながら、時代と戦争に翻弄され世界を巡ることになる。
そして《誕生日》は、画家自身だけでなく、のちにこの絵と出会った“ある一人の人生”までも、静かに、しかし決定的に動かしていった。
「愛の画家」と呼ばれるマルク・シャガールは、はじめからその作風にたどり着いたわけではありません。今回は、シャガール芸術の転換点となった、知性と批評眼を併せ持つ伴侶ベラ・ローゼンフェルトとの出会いと、彼女が送り続けた手紙に焦点を当てます。
「身体性」や生きた経験から描くことを求めたベラの思想は、シャガールを模倣から解放し、唯一無二の幻想世界へ導きました。
