  • Love the focus on metacognition

i’m really enjoying the show and the focus on conceptualize. As someone with aphantasiahia I thought visualization was beyond my grasp so I never really tried. Now seeing… or rather getting better at this skill and I can see the impact on my game and elo improvement.

  • Excellent exercices and resources for adult improvers

Chess is hard. Solving chess puzzles and problems in your mind? Even harder!

This podcast really forces you to visualize without looking at a board. Regular tactics puzzles become simple and easy, by comparison.

Think of it as weightlifting or strengthening exercises for your chess brain. Really helps with visualization and calculation.

Highly recommended, especially for adult improvers.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

❓ My Eyes Lied to Me (Q&A)
Q: Do you have any insight on this?
Aiden discusses how perception can deceive us, particularly in chess situations, and how errors can stem from cognitive complexities or assumptions.
❓ Why Did I Take the Rook (Q&A)
Q: Why did I miss it on move five if I was also threatening mate on F7?
The mistake stems from cognitive overload and a pattern recognition issue where players focus on immediate threats like taking a rook rather than considering deeper strategies like checkmates.
πŸ‘¨β€πŸ« Clarity on Clarity (Insight)
Q: If you can answer each of these questions with yes, then you're on the green. You'll sense what to do after that.
The questions help gauge one's understanding of the chess position and guide towards achieving clarity.
❓ I Want to Visualize (Q&A)
Q: How do I make myself think the way my brain wants to? How do I turn off the visualization instinct?
Tommy is experiencing resistance to diving into the techniques discussed during his training, feeling a stronger visual impulse than initially perceived. Aiden suggests exploring one's natural cognitive style and focusing on understanding the chess position rather than forcing visualization.
❓ Blunder Checks? (Q&A)
Q: Where do you think Blunder checks fail?
Aiden explains that Blunder Checks often rely on the same cognitive resources as decision-making in chess and can overlook conceptual errors, making them ineffective as a catch-all solution.
