Generatieslang woonden er Eltinges in Zwiggelte. Grote boeren met aanzien. Ze leverden bestuurders en zelfs een rechter bij de etstoel. Een van hen was een landverhuizer: Jan Eltinge. Een bijzonder voorval dwingt hem naar Drenthe terug te keren.
Zijn telgebied beslaat 240 vierkante kilometer. Hij telde er vanaf 1967 elke lente. Als er iemand is die weet hoe de vogelstand zich in Zuidwest-Drenthe ontwikkelde, is het Arend van Dijk uit Uffelte.
Er zat prikkeldraad onder het oppervlak, vertelt Arend van Dijk. Maar toch ging hij te water om de jongen van de wilde zwaan op het nest te ringen.
