Since I began listening to Hazel & Katniss & Harry & Starr this year, I have been completely obsessed. Each episode contains an insightful and entertaining conversation about a ya book and its adaptation that always makes you think. They highlight the many tropes that are so often present in YA literature in a fun and interesting way, and are always open to input and feedback from listeners in their book club and mailbag episodes. Before each episode, they do territorial acknowledgments for wher... more

I’m having a blast revisiting stories I devoured as a teen through Joe and Brenna’s lighthearted and fairly balanced critical lens. The angle of comping books to their respective media is also interesting though of course means we mainly only discuss books that have made it to film or TV adaptation status, though I like that they sprinkle in “book club” episodes as well. I do wish the hosts would engage more deeply with some texts—i.e. they criticize Chaos Walking saying it “doesn’t engage deeply with colonialism” when a simple google search of the ser... more
