  • Very good but not quite as advertised

The description of the podcast says it will cover from the fall of Constantinople through the Greco Turkish War in 1923

However they start much earlier and go over many of the major players (mostly) during the Byzantine or Eastern Roman period

Fortunately they deliver an interesting and well prepared podcast very well and should be humming along for awhile since they’re up to the second crusade as of mid April 2024

  • Clear and concise

Gets straight to the point and explains things clearly. Also one of the only history podcasts that takes the time to explain the geography of Greece so the listener can visualize what is going on.

The discussion is speculative, suggesting that perhaps they were not aware of their past due to the passage of eight hundred years.
141: The Empire in Nicaea: Part Three: Saint John Vatatzes the Merciful
Q: So dad, what do you think? Was it pity or mischief that got Theodore released from prison?
The release of Theodore was likely due to mischief rather than pity, as the speaker suggests that releasing him would destabilize the despotate of Epirus.
138: The Mongolians: Part Three: The Golden Khan
Q: So, Daniel, is there like a border between the Song and the Jin? Like maybe, I don't know, a mountain range or a river or something?
Yes, there is a big river that goes right through China in the middle.
140: The Mongolians: Part Five: The Death of Genghis
Q: How would you say, from your own words, how the Mongolian conquests shaped the history of modern Greece?
The Mongolians defeated the Khorazmian Empire which forced a lot of Turkic warriors and nomads to flee west, leading to the rise of the Ottoman Empire and the collapse of the Byzantine Empire.
129: John of Brienne: Part One: The King of Jerusalem
Q: Do you think John of Brienne was good?
He was honorable in medieval times but would be seen as half honorable and half not today due to the context of his actions during the Crusades.
