今天要來說太陽直射南回歸線的節氣，沒錯就是冬至
這天 晝最短，夜最長，嚴冬來臨。
自古以來人們十分重視冬至，而有「冬至大如年一說」
早期社會冬至的前日，到處就可看到石磨 磨糯米，準備作湯圓的佐料，全家圍攏一起搓作湯圓，這就是「冬至圓」。
冬至湯圓是有取於一家大小團圓過冬的美意，不過北方人也有吃水餃、餛飩的，都表現不同的飲食文化。甚至有數九習俗，數完9次9過了81天，春天將來到。

大雪時節，地面上會開始出現積雪。這些厚厚的積雪可以替田間的麥子保暖，像是麥子的棉被。
等天暖溶化後，還能滋潤土地防止春旱。因而有「瑞雪兆豐年」 一說。
在日本高麗菜農也會將高麗菜先採收，讓它被大雪覆蓋變得更香甜。

小雪 跟 雨水 穀雨一樣，反映的是降水情況。由於天氣寒冷，水會由「雨」得型態變成「雪」的型態。
但地表溫度不夠低，無法形成積雪，所以節氣才稱小雪。
此時台灣一期稻作可進行播種育苗，冬季裏作雜糧作物此時也可栽培，唯有高山地區才有降雪的可能。
從前農業種植及育種技術比較不發達，農民為求隆冬時節仍有「菜」可以佐餐，便在此時開始醃菜。

「立」是立正的立，表示季節的開始。像之前介紹過的 立春 立夏 立秋
立冬後，氣溫逐漸下降寒冷。草木凋零，大地蕭瑟。
且水稻收割已結束有「稻成熟，入冬田頭空」這樣一說
