Join Fr. Hezekias and the St. George choir as we rediscover the hymns of Bethlehem, the ancient treasure of Middle Eastern Christmas music.

Just as the Magi expected to find the Newborn King by following a star they saw in the east, so too the Church from her earliest days has looked to the east (that is, ad orientem) in expectation of the Second Coming.

Our attention is focused on at least two things: a supernatural intervention in the life of a nation that has no equal, and a speculation about the rest of the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe that has yet to unfold.

Even before the Incarnation, some members of God's people felt called to live a religious life set apart from the rest of the world. In many ways, their way of life foreshadowed the monastic traditions later found in the Christian Church.

  • Swords and Serpents

I watched this study three times. Took so many excellent notes. This was by far the most concise and interactive study I have ever done. I binged it several times, and am now able to tell the story of salvation history, thanks to Fr Hezikiahs great method for memorization.

I’m taking my time to go seriously through the Swords and Serpents Bible study. Now I want my Bible with me any where I go. Thank you Father Hezekias for this amazing study. I love the idea of reading the Bible with the idea of seeing the Tapestry of the story of salvation. I am learning so much and I am so excited.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Sons of Light
Q: How do modern Jewish scholars respond to findings about the Essenes that support early Christian teachings?
They often de-emphasize the ways that Essene practices resemble early Christianity, arguing against interpretations that portray them as a monastic community or celibate group.
Sons of Light
Q: Is the prophet mentioned in the community rule seen as the eschatological prophet like Moses?
Yes, it's reasonable to associate that prophet with the return of Elijah as foretold in the Book of Malachi, preparing the way for the Messiah.
Sons of Light
Q: Does the Essenes' right lineage have anything to do with why they shunned worship in the Jerusalem Temple?
Yes, they believed the Sadducees and Pharisees controlled the temple illegitimately and did not follow the proper rituals, prompting them to establish their own practices in Qumran instead of participating in the manipulated temple worship.
Sons of Light
Q: Why did the Essenes consider the established religious groups in Israel, the Sadducees and Pharisees, defiled and consequently deploy themselves to the shore of the Dead Sea?
The Essenes viewed the Sadducees as illegitimate since they took the high priesthood by force without the correct lineage. They believed the rightful high priest joined them and refounded their community as a response to the corruption in the temple leadership.
Dying for Wisdom
Q: Why was Socrates sentenced to death?
The sentence was influenced by political currents and the anger of powerful individuals he had criticized.
