  • Imagine if Joe Rogan tried a Pitchfork spinoff

Wherein two dolts confuse loudmouthed narcissism with critical discourse. Not particularly skilled orators, these hosts take vaguely contrarian opinions and hold them with tremendous sanctimony; they seem to believe that there’s only one correct way to experience art. It’s amusing for self-styled freethinkers to brand their views as a “mindset,” a mob mentality - the lack of self awareness is painful. The Jokermen exemplify the late capitalism yuppie hipsterdom with their nasty, cynical gatekeep... more

Don’t let anyone tell you that Root Beer Report isn’t a worthy part of the show - it *is* the show. I would purchase a book of your tasting notes. (The cultural and music analysis is also fantastic)

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

In Conversation: JOHN DARNIELLE
Q: What was the process of actually sequencing this record and mapping this story out, I guess?
Darnielle describes a hybrid approach to songwriting where he initially planned to write the album in order but eventually did a more typical method of writing songs and fitting them in.
In Conversation: JOHN DARNIELLE
Q: Would you mind maybe just telling us about what is, because I mean, this is a concept record? Tell us the concept.
Darnielle shares that the title was inspired by a dream, and he worked backwards to build a narrative around it, involving a character named Peter Balkan and a shipwreck.
In Conversation: CATE LE BON
Q: Can you just kind of talk about how that role, that kind of element of your artistic practice emerged?
It was something I kind of enjoyed and it developed over time, particularly working with other artists like Bradford Cox.
In Conversation: CORY HANSON
Q: What was the range of time these songs were initially from?
I started writing them during quarantine, and it feels like the period for which I wrote these songs is like very short in my mind.
In Conversation: CORY HANSON
Q: Can you tell me a bit about this record?
It's the best of the best of the best of the last five years of songs that I've written.
