彫刻家でもある高村光太郎が、電車の中で人間を観察します。人々の顔を見ては面白さを感じ、魅力を発見し、人間を発見していく様子が興味深く描かれます。見知らぬ少女の顔をまじまじと見てしまい、のちにバツの悪さを感じる様子など可笑し味を感じさせる随筆です。
以前は近所の商店の御用聞きが家々を回って、日ごろの暮らしに必要なものの注文を取り配達してくれました。支払いはつけで月末や年末に払ったものです。山本周五郎も馴染みの酒屋で頼んでは、後でまとめて払うつもりが懐ぐらいと折り合わず、酒屋の主人の人の良さに甘えて、ついつい支払いをあと伸ばしにしてしまいました。そのうち酒屋がつぶれてしまい…。
自由律俳句の代表的存在である尾崎放哉は、一流の経歴を持つエリート人生を歩んでいましたが、家族も仕事も捨てて流浪の人生を送りました。その最晩年は、島の小さな庵に居を移して終の棲家とします。その島に転がる石を見て思いを巡らせたのがこの随筆です。これからしばらくして放哉は人生の幕を閉じます。
活動写真館の楽団に所属するセロ（チェロ）奏者ゴーシュは、うまく弾くことが出来ずに楽団長に叱られてしまいます。その日を境に毎晩遅く動物たちが訪ねて来るようになり、怒ったり面倒臭がったりしながらも、動物たちの相手をしながら演奏することになってしまいます。
