#171: Salena Godden — Spoken Word, Poetry, Memoir, and Novels: Turning Pain into Courage on the Page and Getting Published
Q: What does optimism look like for you as a writer?
I've seen some real sadness and known some real pain and trauma, but at the bottom of the well, there's only one way to look and that's up. I believe in good people wanting a better world.
#171: Salena Godden — Spoken Word, Poetry, Memoir, and Novels: Turning Pain into Courage on the Page and Getting Published
Q: What would you say to someone trying to get noticed in the writing wilderness?
You must realize you don't have to beat yourself up and be in a place of pain and trauma to make beautiful work and that nobody can write your story like you.
#170: Mary Jean Chan — Emotional Truth in Contemporary Poetry: Imagery, Juxtaposition, and Finding the Right Form
Q: What advice do you have for writers who are at that point where they feel ready to share?
I think it's interesting, right? Because when we hear a list of publications like that, there is maybe the presumption that it happened quite naturally or quite easily, but actually in between all those acceptances were so many rejections.
#170: Mary Jean Chan — Emotional Truth in Contemporary Poetry: Imagery, Juxtaposition, and Finding the Right Form
Q: What were you doing to improve your craft?
I was writing up in college, I joined the slam poetry team... but poetry was something I was doing on the side as a hobby.
#163: Indyana Schneider — Lessons from an Opera Singer Who Wrote Her Novel on the Tube; Rhythm, Desire & Tension for Fiction Writers
