  • insightful conversations for authors and entrepreneurs

I really enjoyed the episode with Matthew Lynn: Journalist and Author Turned Publishing Entrepreneur. His story about navigating rejections, embracing digital publishing, and building new opportunities from a back catalogue resonated with me as an author who also thinks about the business side of books. That’s what makes this show stand out — it highlights not only big ideas but also the practical realities of being an author and entrepreneur. Each episode leaves me with fresh insight and inspir... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Elizabeth Chika Tippett, "The Master-Servant Doctrine: How Old Legal Rules Haunt the Modern Workplace" (U California Press, 2025)
Q: How has the ideology of free labor shaped perceptions of work today?
The ideology of free labor questions whether wage labor is the only aspiration for making a living, suggesting more options should be available, like independent work or caregiving, allowing for a healthier work culture.
Elizabeth Chika Tippett, "The Master-Servant Doctrine: How Old Legal Rules Haunt the Modern Workplace" (U California Press, 2025)
Q: What is the significance of the National Labor Relations Act in limiting master-servant doctrines?
The National Labor Relations Act protects union organizing and collective bargaining, restricting employer control. However, with only about 10% of workers unionized, many remain vulnerable to master-servant principles in an at-will employment system.
Elizabeth Chika Tippett, "The Master-Servant Doctrine: How Old Legal Rules Haunt the Modern Workplace" (U California Press, 2025)
Q: Could you start us off by introducing yourself a little bit and tell us why you decided to write this book? What even is the Master-Servant Doctrine and the Master-Servant System?
I'm a professor at the University of Oregon School of Law. I was a lawyer in Silicon Valley, where I often dealt with issues surrounding worker obligations to their employers. The Master-Servant Doctrine reflects on how old legal relationships still influence modern work and lawsuits. Despite many employment laws protecting workers, the oppressive feeling in workplaces continues due to these enduring doctrines.
Jimmy Wales with Dan Gardner, "The Seven Rules of Trust: A Blueprint for Building Things That Last" (Crown Currency, 2025)
Q: How did the book happen?
Wales discusses how a conversation with Crown Publishing led him to focus on the theme of trust in his writings, which evolved into the book.
Wendy Smith and Marianne Lewis, "Both/And Thinking: Embracing Creative Tensions to Solve Your Toughest Problems" (Harvard Business Review Press, 2022)
Q: What are the important additional questions that we should be asking right now, both as researchers and with regard to practice?
Wendy emphasizes the need to foster expansiveness in thought and hold conversations with differing perspectives, which is crucial in contemporary society.
