I really liked some episodes which had some interviews with researchers and sex workers, but with the May 2023 episode with Mary Eberstadt, I’ve learned this podcast series is just as bad as the mainstream media

There is no sex worker solidarity without solidarity for trans people. If you’re reading this and thinking “well not everything is black and white, you just don’t want people to express their opinions freely”, please go educate yourself with some recent research on the current statistic... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Jacob Bloomfield, "Drag: A British History" (U California Press, 2023)
Q: Why did you choose the time frame from 1870 to 1970 for your analysis of drag?
The 1870s marks important developments in drag, including the popularization of the term and changes in cultural perceptions, while 1970 represents a turning point in drag being more overtly claimed by gay culture and politics.
Jacob Bloomfield, "Drag: A British History" (U California Press, 2023)
Q: How do you define and use the term drag here?
Drag is generally described as men dressing as women and women dressing as men for performance, but it's also a kind of performance that comments on gender, which is still a key part of drag.
Jacob Bloomfield, "Drag: A British History" (U California Press, 2023)
Q: Could you share a little bit about the opening of your book and why you decided to start with Mr. Ronald John Hill's 1958 visit?
I opened with a vignette about Secretary Hill's visit to the drag show as it reveals various perceptions of drag during that time, and highlights the tensions between views of drag as an artistic tradition and as immoral behavior.
Jacob Bloomfield, "Drag: A British History" (U California Press, 2023)
Q: Tell us how this book came about, or as I like to ask folks here, tell me your book's origin story.
The project started during my master's year at the University of Edinburgh and was sparked by an article about the Bolton and Park case which involved two female impersonators being arrested for conspiracy to commit sodomy, leading me to explore the history of male cross dressing and drag performance.
Jamieson Webster, "Disorganisation & Sex" (Divided Publishing, 2022)
Q: What do you make of the increasing presence of surgical metaphors in discussions of contemporary sexuality?
Webster discusses the contradictions in the return to surgical metaphors and the implications for materiality in our sexual experiences.
