  • It's easy to forget about the bevy of video games adapted from comic books. There's plenty of AAA games that get made and have fanfare -- but what about the rest of the catalogue?

Play Comics addresses this niche in really enjoyable ways, breaking down the source material of the comics behind the game adaptations and bringing wonderful guests to join in the fun. Highly recommend!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Spider-Man Battle for New York with Jarett Tyree (Has to Do With Spider-Man, I Think)
Q: If you had somebody who you knew wanted to get into Spider-Man, or specifically the Spider-Man Ultimate Universe, would you give them this game as a bit of a primer course?
No, I don't think so, because I don't think there's enough here to make it a way to dip your toes into the Ultimate Universe.
Dragon Ball Z Budokai with Doc Issues (Capes on the Couch)
Q: Is there anyone you would want in the game who isn't currently a playable character?
Doc Issues responds that he wouldn't necessarily want any characters added since the game captures the essential fighters well enough from the first three arcs.
Dragon Ball Z Budokai with Doc Issues (Capes on the Couch)
Q: What is it about black nerds and Dragon Ball?
Doc Issues shares that the enthusiasm for Dragon Ball among black nerds comes from a cultural appreciation, seeing characters express themselves without holding back, similar to the dynamics of rap battles where authenticity is key.
Ultimate Spider-Man with Derek B Gayle and Doug Fink (Walloping Websnappers)
Q: Would you recommend this game as an introduction to the comics?
The consensus is that while it's not completely representative of what the comics do best, it makes for a solid primer but it would be better to just start with the comics themselves.
Ultimate Spider-Man with Derek B Gayle and Doug Fink (Walloping Websnappers)
Q: How does the Ultimate Spider-Man universe feel compared to the existing Spider-Man stories?
The hosts express that while the Ultimate Spider-Man comics provide a fresh take on Spider-Man, they ultimately share many of the same story arcs and themes, making it feel like a modern retelling rather than a completely original narrative.
