  • Great podcast, bad interviewer and audio

Interviewers are awful. Terrible voices, especially for the Haman interview. Get a better interviewer who can actually pronounce the words and terms correctly. Very amateurish

Itohan I. Osayimwese, "Africa's Buildings: Architecture and the Displacement of Cultural Heritage" (Princeton UP, 2025)
Q: Can you tell us about the MCN and MOA museums and why you focus on them towards the start of the book?
The MCN and MOA are significant in discussions about the restitution of African heritage, serving as counter models to colonial museum practices and claiming the return of displaced cultural objects.
Itohan I. Osayimwese, "Africa's Buildings: Architecture and the Displacement of Cultural Heritage" (Princeton UP, 2025)
Q: Can we talk a little bit more about the concept of dismemberment throughout the book?
I found the term 'dismemberment' in a 19th century colonial text, which captures the violent removal and fragmentation of African architectural objects, revealing the underlying violence involved in their historical displacement.
Itohan I. Osayimwese, "Africa's Buildings: Architecture and the Displacement of Cultural Heritage" (Princeton UP, 2025)
Q: Could you please introduce yourself a little bit and tell us why you decided to write this book?
I am Dr. Itohan Osayimwese, a professor at Brown University, focusing on architectural history. I decided to write this book to address the lack of visual resources depicting African architecture that I encountered while teaching.
Yossef Rapoport, "Becoming Arab: The Formation of Arab Identity in the Medieval Middle East" (Princeton UP, 2025)
Q: How do peasants express their Arab identity at the end of your historical period?
By the end of the 15th century, rural populations began to express Arab identity through dress, language, and local customs that reinforced their claims of being Arab.
Yossef Rapoport, "Becoming Arab: The Formation of Arab Identity in the Medieval Middle East" (Princeton UP, 2025)
Q: How does Islam fit into this conversation about Arab identity?
Rapoport suggests that Islam was adopted by communities first, which later influenced their claims of Arab identity as they sought to erase their Christian past and elevate their status within the Islamic community.
