Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Andrew Bernstein, "Fuji: A Mountain In The Making" (Princeton UP, 2025)
Q: How do early human interactions with Mt. Fuji reveal its significance?
Archaeological evidence shows humans have inhabited the region around Fuji for nearly 40,000 years, with festivals and rituals emerging as it became part of the cultural landscape by the 8th century.
Andrew Bernstein, "Fuji: A Mountain In The Making" (Princeton UP, 2025)
Q: What do we know about how this volcano was first formed?
Fuji is a stratovolcano that formed from alternating layers of hardened lava and tephra, sitting at the junction of three tectonic plates.
Dan Edelstein, "The Revolution to Come: A History of an Idea from Thucydides to Lenin" (Princeton UP, 2025)
Q: But do you think that American and British and English revolutions were fundamentally conservative revolutions despite the fact that they caused some radical changes in their respective countries?
The distinction between conservative and radical really only makes sense around the French Revolution. In the 17th century, everyone was somewhat conservative in that they sought to preserve or restore an idealized past rather than striving for a radically different future.
Dan Edelstein, "The Revolution to Come: A History of an Idea from Thucydides to Lenin" (Princeton UP, 2025)
Q: Can you just very briefly introduce yourself, your field of study and your field of expertise, and then tell us how the idea of the book came to you?
I'm a professor primarily actually of French literature. When I was working on my PhD, I fell into the study of the French Revolution, which became a fascinating object of study for me. I became interested in the legacies and dynamics of the French Revolution, leading me to write this book.
John Tolan, "Islam: A New History from Muhammad to the Present" (Princeton UP, 2025)
Q: What significance did the Arab Spring have on contemporary Arab politics?
The Arab Spring revealed public discontent with autocratic rule but resulted in mixed outcomes, often leading to disappointments with newly elected leaders.
