  • Started dogs with Mark Dinsmore

Thanks again Nick for an engaging interview with another Mark, Mark Dinsmore. My experience with started (and rescue dogs) are the same as Mark describes. Anyone thinking about getting a bird dog or training a bird dog would be well served to listen to this Mark (Dinsmore) and Mark Payton. Well done Nick!

  • A great podcast in a marketplace of boring upland podcasts

I think Nick’s podcast is one of the best in upland hunting. I like that he actually listens to the guests, who are actually the star of the show since they’re THE GUEST. He covers all kinds of topics related to the uplands and has a healthy understanding of being an upland hunter with middle class money in the middle of the country with a family. He isn’t bragging about gear I can’t afford and he makes the content accessible. He would get 5 stars but the audio quality needs an upgrade.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#339 | Hunting Ruffed Grouse and Woodcock North of the Border with Andrew & Mark
Q: What do you know about if somebody from the US wants to come hunting there?
It's easier to come across the border with a shotgun than it is for a Canadian to get into the US. You find a good outfitter, and they will help arrange lodging and everything.
#333 | Lessons and Observations from a Lifetime in the Uplands with Mark Reese
Q: What's your basic method for starting a pup?
The learning process is similar to coaching a child, and I focus on finding wild quail for training.
#332 | Hunting and Researching Upland Birds on Working Western Landscapes with Dave Dahlgren
Q: What are right now today the biggest threats to maintaining that sagebrush?
In the Great Basin, the biggest issue is fire and its relationship with cheatgrass; development in eastern parts leads to your loss of that sagebrush cover.
#332 | Hunting and Researching Upland Birds on Working Western Landscapes with Dave Dahlgren
Q: If you could draw a comparison for me here, what is the sweet spot for sage grouse?
The key to sage grouse is sagebrush cover, and we call it the one quarter, one half, two thirds rule.
#331 | 50+ Years of Upland Hunting over Flushing Dogs with Randy Shepard
Q: How did you really get into upland hunting?
Randy discusses his early days of hunting, which included getting a black lab for $20, and how he evolved as a bird hunter across various states.
