After a three-year interim, Dad and I finally return to Reinhold Niebuhr's magisterial work, The Nature and Destiny of Man, first delivered as the Gifford Lectures in 1939, then revised and published in 1943. In this episode on vol. 2, we discuss wha... more
This oft-overlooked little epistle of the New Testament is very likely the first extant work of Christian literature—characterized by the apostle Paul's intense pastoral love for his congregation in Thessalonica and comforting hope in the return on t... more
There is plenty puzzling about the doctrine of the resurrection, no matter which way you slice it. But it's extra puzzling if you prioritize the immortality of the soul over the resurrection of the body, and if you prioritize the resurrection of the ... more

As someone who turned to religion (and the Lutheran tradition) late in life— and with a doctorate in philosophy (in the continental tradition) in tow— this show has been a balm to my unfounded (if very typical) worry that faith was a matter of giving up on critical thinking. This show promotes philosophically informed, critically engaged thinking in the tradition of Lutheranism. It is helping me feel at home in this tradition while also clarifying some of its most difficult conundrums. Paul can ... more
Sarah and Paul consistently produce compelling content with each conversation. Each episode is replete with the kind of rich theology, self-effacing humor, friendly rivalry and love for holy scripture which whets one’s appetite to nurture faith seeking understanding. Even for those who may differ, there is respectful, informed and open dialogue which can lead to surprising outcomes.
I am embarrassed to say that despite and advanced degree and decades of church ministry, I still struggle to think through some fundamental ideas of faith and doctrine. Queen of the Sciences has been one of the best classrooms to tighten my thinking in recent years. The discussion is stimulating and frequently deep. Critical ideas are treated fairly and the hosts rarely resort to cheap polemics you find on other theology podcasts.
The level of discourse is unmatched in any other theological podcast. Nowhere else will you get Ellul, Augustine, Nazianzen, Luther, Robert Jenson, Foucault, Heidegger, Hegel, incisive social commentary, and all with such a central concern for the gospel of Jesus Christ and the Scriptures. Can’t recommend this show enough. The Hinlickys are brilliant.
Look no further / highly recommend for Pastors, Deacons, Lay Leaders. Very thoughtful dialogue with substance!
