I am a second generation Canadian. Growing up, kids called me a “coconut” (brown on the outside, white on the inside). As offensive as that was, I laughed along with them at the time…what was I going to say? After my daughter was born, I suffered from an identity crisis. I realized my daughter would never get the same experiences as I did growing up (she’s half white and my side of the family is very small now). The large Filipino gatherings, getting the socials cues and seeing the subtle interactions between generations, or even the cuisine.
