  • Sherman has completely lost the plot

I used to look to Sherman for a voice of reason, especially during these insane times, but that is no longer the case. His moral compass is increasingly pointing in the wrong direction as of about a year ago. It’s a shame to see Sherman go down this path

  • Love the podcast. But….

Love the podcast based on around a dozen episodes so far. Surprised, and disheartened by the political takes. I am very critical of Trump for many of the same reasons as Dr, Carroll but why is that not accompanied with critique of the democrats? As Carroll would be first to say, many things are true at the same time. Just one example…Trump is going after the universities with blunt force instruments. There’s lots of problems with this as Carroll emphasizes. But why is it not balanced with ... more

  • Unfailingly Impressive

Just a remarkable celebration and exploration of ourselves and our world as scientific objects. I can’t always follow the most technical discussions since I don’t have a STEM background, but overall the pod makes serious analysis accessible and groundbreaking.

AMA | Feb 2026
Q: How do you reconcile the mathematical aspects of physics with the philosophical implications of mathematics such as truths about abstract objects?
I see abstract mathematical objects like Sherlock Holmes as useful constructs that help us understand the physical world. However, their existence is not the same as the reality of physical entities, and I think understanding consciousness requires examining both empirical evidence and deeper underlying processes.

Q: How do you view the importance of education in today's context?
I believe obtaining a college education is valuable not only for career prospects but also for personal growth and understanding the world. It's essential to seek out educational opportunities despite the rising costs and current societal challenges.
AMA | Feb 2026
Q: What is your take on the current state of democracy in the United States?
The current state is concerning, with rising lawlessness and a government that seems unrestrained by traditional democratic norms. However, I believe that ordinary Americans do not support authoritarianism and there is hope for eventual stability and improvement.
341 | Stewart Brand on Maintenance as an Organizing Principle
Q: Why do you think maintenance is not given more attention?
It has never been considered a subject of its own, even though it's essential for complex systems.
341 | Stewart Brand on Maintenance as an Organizing Principle
Q: What is the premise behind your book on maintenance?
It's about how maintenance is often overlooked despite being crucial for our complex systems and technology.
