Millions of kids can't read well. Scientists have known for decades how children learn to read, but many schools don’t know about the research. They buy teacher training and books that are rooted in a disproven idea. In Sold a Story, Emily Hanford investigates four authors and a publishing company that have made millions selling this idea.

This podcast changed me. I love this podcast and have listened to it more than once. My mom is a teacher and had to listen to sold a story and I got in the car one day heard a little and told her that she can’t continue until we’re back in the car together.

  • A Lifeline for Struggling Readers and Their Families

I cried during several episodes of this podcast. Sold a Story didn’t just inform me — it reached into a part of my childhood I’ve carried quietly for decades. I was a kid in the 90s and graduated high school in the early 2000s, and it took me so long to learn how to read because I was taught using methods that simply didn’t work. I struggled year after year — not because I wasn’t trying, but because I wasn’t being given the tools I needed.

  • Riveting, informative, infuriating

I have never written a podcast review before. But I had to write this one to encourage anyone out there to listen to this. It’s a superb piece of investigative journalism, thoroughly researched and well told. Schools all over the US are teaching reading with a method that is not only ineffective but actually harmful. The scientific evidence has been around for decades, but the method keeps getting used, on and on and on. It is an appalling story of people who don’t know what they’re doing but be... more

  • Life-changer

I listen to a lot of podcasts and have never left a review, but this was like listening to a particularly upsetting wrongful conviction podcast but it’s kids being prevented from learning skills necessary for their securing and democratic society’s viability. Truly wild, exceptionally important.
