  • Great questions from host

I'm a PhD scientist in life sciences; I listen to a lot of science research podcasts and this one is the best I've found so far, definitely superior to similar offerings from Nature/Science/PNAS. The interviews are interesting and the host asks insightful and thoughtful questions which really dig into the science being discussed. I would encourage anyone interested in learning more life sciences to give this a listen. Keep up the good work!

Nocebos, and why the eyes of some species stay shut at birth
Q: How do patients react to negative information about medications?
Patients are more likely to experience side effects when given a leaflet focused heavily on negatives without mentioning benefits, which can lead to a nocebo effect.

Q: What happens if we provide visual stimulation early?
The research on ferrets suggests that premature exposure can lead to deficits in motion processing and visual issues later in life.
Ants doing gene therapy, and tadpole microbiomes
Q: So is my microbiome more narrow when I have a gastrointestinal problem?
The evidence suggests that the microbiome's narrowing could occur due to the illness, potentially causing further health problems.
Ants doing gene therapy, and tadpole microbiomes
Q: Are the tadpoles, when they're developing in their egg stage, are they sterile at that stage?
Yes, they are sterile at that stage and pick up microbes from their environment after hatching.
