  • Real Gardeners! Hooray!

I have been listening to Dee and Carol for about a year, and this podcast and all the side goodies these gardeners share is GOLD! Their gardening stories are real, they only venture to comment critically on plants they have actually grown, and the “Rabbit Holes” have sent me diving down into fascinating topics. Thank you ladies for all your hard work—and if you’re a listener looking for real garden talk, SUBSCRIBE! 😉

  • I love Dee and Carol

I was first introduced to Dee when I bought her book to learn more about gardening. After reading the book, I looked her up and learned about this podcast, and now this is one of my favorite podcasts. I love listening to Dee and Carol’s banter (they sound genuine and like people I want to be good friends with). I also love hearing about their rabbit holes and all their wisdom. It’s a breath of fresh air that I look forward to every week.

  • Zonally inappropriate? Still worth a listen.

I wasn’t going to tune in because I garden on what seems like a different planet. Summer rain? What’s that? Heat waves and hard freezes— huh? And weeds and insect pests I have never heard of abound in their worlds. But it doesn’t matter, this podcast has become a must-listen for me in my maritime Zone 8b. The quotes, the book recommendations, even the rabbit holes all make it worthwhile. I have learned to perk up my ears when they sadly say “it doesn’t like our heat” or “won’t survive our winter... more

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Holly and the Ivy, Plus Favorite Veggie Cookbooks
Q: What about root washing before planting? Is there a benefit?
Root washing can help identify tangled roots and remove potential pests, making it beneficial for planting.
Green Grows Our Gardens: The Species Viridis
Q: When should I trim back my hydrangea, Carol?
It depends on whether the hydrangea blooms on old wood or new wood. If it blooms on old wood, leave it alone. If it blooms on new wood, you can cut it back significantly.
Texensis With a Side of Cardinalis
Q: Do you think if I cut the flowers off as they die back, it will do any good to slow them down?
Cutting off the seed heads would be a big help, and you need to see if they actually are the kind with runners.
Fall, and Our Thoughts Turn Toward Gardening
Q: How do I keep chipmunks from digging in my containers on the front porch?
Try using flat rocks around the plants, a deer-type deterrent spray, or forks sticking up out of the pots.
Lettuce Turn Our Gardens Toward Fall
Q: Are violas and pansies deer resistant?
Heavens no, they wouldn't be deer resistant at all.
