Gardening Practices

Each week, horticulturalist Felder Rushing shares stories, answers questions and just talks gardening. Of course, you’ll hear a bit of “cheesy music” in every program and you might hear a bad joke or two as well. The Gestalt Gardener is a long-time favorite on MPB Think Radio, due in no small part to Felder’s laid-back, your-neighbors-might-talk-but-so-what approach to gardening.

  • Not good

I know Felder, met him a few times.

Oftentimes, Felder feels stuck in the 1980’s, as most of his plant recommendations have been out of fashion for decades. He clearly has not kept up with trends in horticulture, and if he has, he certainly does not relay that info to his audienc... more

  • Felder Rushing is the most charming and knowledgeable gardening expert you could ask for. I don't think I really qualify as a gardener but Felder makes me dream of a much bigger garden. He keeps me laughing and smiling and always forgives his listeners their gardening sins.

The Gestalt Gardener | First Frost of the Fall
Q: How do I take care of newly transplanted hydrangeas?
Prune them back a little bit to help them establish better, but do it in winter to avoid additional damage.
The Gestalt Gardener | First Frost of the Fall
Q: What variety of citrus trees would you recommend near Hattiesburg?
For citrus trees, keep them in pots to move indoors during cold snaps, and kumquats tend to withstand cold better than others.
The Gestalt Gardener | Booglified!
Q: What flooring should I use for my greenhouse?
Avoid using washed gravel as it can be noisy and unstable; instead, use square flagstones.
The Gestalt Gardener | Booglified!
Q: What should I do with my rose bush in a pot?
You should wait until February to prune it and ensure it can survive outside in the winter.
The Gestalt Gardener | Is It Weird?
Q: Should I prune oak leaf hydrangeas now or do it early next spring?
It's best to wait until after a frost to do any good pruning, but you can do light pruning now.
