A charming young Czech promises staggering returns. An entire country’s oil industry is up for grabs. America’s top investors want in. Sounds too good to be true? Damn right it is.
This is a story of private jets, $20,000 dinners, and suitcases stuffed with cash. It’s also a tale about the collapse of communism, the free-for-all that followed, and the birth of the oligarchs. And it’s a story of p... more

I loved this so much. I hate the reviews that pooh pooh the personality of this. It’s adorable and engaging and so well told. I LOVED IT. I particularly loved this narrator’s voice
I found the banter between the hosts terrific. As someone whose eyes glaze over at the talk of financial corruption, they made this series not just palpable, but delicious. Hope they do another one soon!
Great material but the narrator’s script is phenomenally annoying. Just tell the story. The attempts at humor/wit are excruciating and make this almost unlistenable.
Gut aufbereitet, klar gesprochen, mit versch. Speakern und Soundkulisse. Höre gerne zu.
Captivating. Kicked off my obsession with podcasts of this nature.
Content is fascinating but the inane chatter and irrelevant outtakes are obnoxious. Why so many old man sounds? Another review said he’s like the loud uncle at a holiday party and that’s exactly right. Just tell the story 😩 Also the way they mock the interviewees is tiresome. Not everyone needs to be ridiculed, just the one sociopath at the center of the story. That would be enough to lend humor to the telling.
Don’t be off put by the folks saying the narration is annoying. This story unfolds more like a play where the fourth wall gets broken. They have interviews a very well done back and forth and it stays perfectly on track. None of it is random, they just tell the story together sometimes. Great timing, well researched. More light hearted true crime that’s really fun to listen to and hard to stop listening to! Personally love the format and I listen to a bunch of true crime!
It’s a very interesting story and would have given it 4 stars if it wasn’t for the narrator Joe Nocera. This guy tries to make the podcast all about him and he never seems to stop interrupting the story with silly wisecracks that are not in the slightest bit funny. I couldn’t take any more of him after 3 episodes which is a shame.
Dommage que nous ne puissions pas choisir la langue d’écoute !
I enjoyed the story, but the script often fell flat. There were a lot of terrible jokes, repeated information, and moments that felt like they underestimated the listener’s attention. The narration dragged the story out longer than necessary. That said, the plot itself was engaging, so overall I liked it, just wished the execution was a bit tighter.
Well researched and produced. Humor and structure win the day. Worth the listen.
I tend to listen to all of the Apple Original podcasts, and this has been my favorite so far. The story of Viktor is told very well, and could easily be a movie or miniseries. The writing is excellent and well done to everyone at Blanchard House. If you enjoy true crime stories, you won’t regret going on this journey with Joe as the narrator.
Really interesting story. Unfortunately, Nocera constantly inserts his own little one liners that are distracting and make your eyes roll. Worth the listen but it’s painful getting past Joe’s endless, rehearsed, quips.
What is an interesting cinching story and interviewee commentary is constantly interrupted by the narrator/host. It’s so frustrating and distracting, some of it was so frequent within one sentence, or tacky, like a loud uncle who wants to interject themselves for constant attention at the holiday dinner, it was really annoying and almost patronising. Listeners are not here for a reaction series, listeners want to digest the content, develop their own reactions and thoughts around the mystery and... more
Apple TV has been surprising in the podcasts they have produced (some of them are accompanied by TV shows) this one had what seemed like an interesting story however, like most of the other reviews, the narration is truly abhorrent. It’s a one man comedy show with parts of the of actual story sprinkled over the top.
The story suffers as a result and becomes secondary to the narrators self indulgent, conjecture filled, dramatisation and glamorisation of it. It makes it abundantly clear this i... more
