What a fun and interesting well done podcast.

Seeing how I’m going in tomorrow for a lateral bucket handle tear operation this podcast came at the perfect time. It was great to just hear some medical terms and procedures from professionals.

I think the talk about post op was the best for someone going in for a procedure. As a patient less than 24 hours away from surgery it was so cool to hear professionals talk about the facts for healing and getting back to activities.

    A++++ Thank You

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

153: Dr. Sara Edwards – The Thrower’s Shoulder (Part 2)
Q: How do you counsel the throwing athletes regarding their return to play and what they should expect about their performance?
I tell them that they may not return to the same level of performance, with a likelihood of only 15 to 20 percent returning to their prior performance level post-surgery.
153: Dr. Sara Edwards – The Thrower’s Shoulder (Part 2)
Q: When you're evaluating these partial tears arthroscopically, what's your threshold for debridement versus repair in a throwing athlete versus a non?
Most of the time, I try not to fix them if I can avoid it, especially if the tear is less than 50% of the tendon width.
153: Dr. Sara Edwards – The Thrower’s Shoulder (Part 2)
Q: So can you elaborate on the mechanism of cuff tears in throwing athletes and how do these tears typically differ from those like attritional acute on chronic tears that we see in older non-throwers?
Cuff tears in throwing athletes are mostly due to tight posterior capsules and glenohumeral internal rotation deficit (GIRD), which leads to micro-tears in the rotator cuff. In contrast, older non-throwers generally experience chronic tears due to age-related degeneration.
152: Dr. Sara Edwards – The Thrower’s Shoulder (Part 1)
Q: When are you typically clearing patients to return to throwing after a slap repair versus tinnitus?
After a SLAP repair, I usually clear them to return to throwing after 9 to 10 months, while for biceps tenodesis, it's around 3 months post-surgery.
152: Dr. Sara Edwards – The Thrower’s Shoulder (Part 1)
Q: What are your preferred diagnostic tests that you focus on to help make your decision on where you're going?
I focus on range of motion, scapular movement, palpation of the bicipital groove, and specific tests like the O'Brien's test and Speed's test.
