1. 早期本來也有女性演出
17世紀初期（江戶時代初），歌舞伎最先是由一位女性 出雲阿國 發明的，最早的歌舞伎叫「女歌舞伎」。那時候全部都是女生在演出。
2. 政府禁止女性登台（元和禁令）
因為女歌舞伎太受歡迎，觀眾都過度追捧、甚至引發風化問題，
江戶幕府在 1629 年 頒布命令：「女性不得參與歌舞伎」。
結果女性被全面禁止上台 → 改由少年男孩演出（若衆歌舞伎）。
3. 連男孩也被禁止，最後變成成年人男性專屬
少年歌舞伎同樣引發風紀問題，
所以幕府又禁止少年出演，只能由 成年男子 來表演。
這個傳統延續到今天，形成現代的「野郎歌舞伎」＝全男性歌舞伎。
