Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Nic Stone on making the jump from YA to adult fiction
Q: So you were talking to us before about kind of the objectification of sex workers in general, and then specifically erotic dancers. And one thing I noticed when I was reading this book that I really appreciated was how centered the book is on the women, with few exceptions. Can you explain your goals for those club scenes?
I wanted to portray the women in their full complexity, showing empowerment rather than victimhood, while also having conversations about objectification and the choices they make in their lives.
Nic Stone on making the jump from YA to adult fiction
Q: When it comes to the research process for this book, did you do a lot? Obviously, we know some of the inspiration behind it from your childhood and your work as a personal trainer with those exotic dancers. But did you kind of go even deeper into the world as you were writing this?
Yes, I did research by visiting strip clubs and talking to dancers, gaining insight into their lives and perspectives, which informed my writing significantly.
Nic Stone on making the jump from YA to adult fiction
Q: Can you take us through the evolution of that decision? Was it just like one day, you're like, yeah, I'm ready to do this? Or was there more of a sort of thinking about it for a long time before you sat down and started writing type of process?
I always think through my ideas for a long time before I write. I need a few years to fully develop the concept and outline before I actually jump into drafting.
October 2025 Three Things
Q: Can I ask a clarifying question?
Was the goal actually to get rejected or was the goal to go on an artist residency?
Elin Hilderbrand & Shelby Cunningham on Their New Mother/Daughter Book Collab
Q: So, are there potential sequels or more books planned in this series?
I would like to say it's a two-book series, and Shelby expressed interest in writing about college experiences in the future.
