Under the Influence is a deep dive into social media, a place haunted by aspirational marketing where it feels like every other person is a social media influencer trying to sell you something, all while posed in perfect houses that never seem to get messy. And behind this airbrushed perfection is money, so much money. Billions and billions of dollars. Journalist and mom Jo Piazza looks at how we ... more

I’m so glad I discovered Jo’s podcast. I’m a new listener, and it’s already at the top of my list. Fun guests with useful experiences to share, along with entertaining banter, of course.
Latest episode about weight loss drugs lost me in the first two minutes when said that that every woman in her 30s, 40s, or 50s is either taking or secretly googling these drugs, and that she’s sick of all these people pretending they stay in shape without drugs. She ends with the classic “I want to hear from real women.” As a woman in her 30s who has not been “secretly googling” weight loss drugs and does stay in shape via diet and exercise only, I didn’t realize I don’t count as a “real woman”... more
The earlier episodes were very well researched and sincere. Now it’s turned into Jo’s neuroticism show. It just screams major coping to me. She whines about it all. You can also tell she used to work for the gossip magazines because the jealousy and pettiness just oozes out of her. She wants you to know that if you’re not fat and liberal and miserable and hate your husband like her -then you’re just wrong and she’s here to save your soul because she’s the smartest. It’s okay to get old Jo! Bit... more
I listened to the “cult of skinny” episode, which is about social media perpetuating eating disorder content—an important and fascinating topic, and I appreciate the host’s intention to engage with it. But then the first ad of the episode is the host telling us about a metabolism tracker, used in part for “weight management”. I’m sorry but how can I continue to listen to you talk about influencers peddling weight loss content to their audience when you are literally doing the same thing to us, i... more

Exploring the intersection of social media and motherhood, the content scrutinizes how online platforms shape societal expectations and personal identity. It often features riveting conversations with authors, mental health professionals, and cultural commentators who discuss the pressures of motherhood, the influence of social media, financial independence, and the shaming of women's choices. The focus is largely on empowering women to reclaim their autonomy amid unrealistic ideals projected online, addressing topics from perimenopause to the impact of social media addiction. Unique elements include a willingness to engage with controversies and an emphasis on strong feminist narratives.
