鹿野苑是地名，位於波羅奈國。過去這個地方有很多野鹿，其中有一隻鹿王，就是釋迦牟尼佛的前身。波羅奈國的國王喜歡吃鹿肉，經常前來打獵，大量圍捕群鹿。鹿王眼看鹿群每天生活在恐懼之中，數量也逐漸減少，便跟國王商量：「大王，您喜歡吃鹿肉，現在我跟您談個條件，我們每天主動輪流送來一隻鹿，您就不需要大費周章地打獵，而鹿群也得以安養增長，不會因為大量捕殺而耗盡。」國王想想，覺得這個提議很不錯，就接受了鹿王的條件。

初轉法輪 度五比丘
釋迦牟尼佛所有功德統統成就了，成就了佛道；所以說「成道已」。成道以後，靜坐思惟：「我現在要弘揚佛法、普度眾生，先要看一看，哪些根機是最先成熟的？」釋迦牟尼佛成道後先講《華嚴經》，但《華嚴經》是圓頓的法門，度菩薩根機，聲聞根機聽不懂其中的道理，所謂「有眼不見舍那身，有耳不聞圓頓教」。所以，釋迦牟尼佛觀機逗教，又在鹿野苑講四諦法門，度五比丘。

有覺有觀的功夫，對治了粗的煩惱、粗的妄想，心得清涼、心得清淨，產生了輕安和禪定，就是初禪，稱為「離生喜樂地」，再也不會打妄想了。繼續靜坐，這個境界經常現前，感到法喜、禪悅，產生了法執。雖然不貪外面的財、色、名、食、睡，卻貪著這個快樂的禪定境界。由於心愈來愈細，馬上察覺了，不再貪著這種粗的快樂。不貪，就是離。離開了歡喜、離開了禪悅，慢慢地得到更深的禪定，由定產生了更微細、更微妙的快樂，就證到二禪──定生喜樂地。

離生喜樂 成就初禪
「住大禪定」─初禪、二禪、三禪、四禪，是指住這四禪，這是有修有證。「四禪八定」通內、通外，無論凡夫、外道、聖人，都可以修四禪八定。釋迦牟尼佛住在什麼大禪定？就是住到四禪─捨念清淨地。
