Experts shape our world. Sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. In every big story, you’ll find one; you’ll find a researcher, scientist, engineer, planner, policy wonk, data nerd, bureaucrat, regulator, intellectual, or pseudo-intellectual. Their ideas are often opaque, unrecognized, and difficult to understand. Some of them like it that way. On Cited, we reveal their hidden stories.

  • Brilliant

One of the podcasts I value most. Nearly every episode is exactly on a topic sorely needed but missing or avoided by most of those attempting to understand and discuss what is happening in our politics, our universities, our lives. Rigorously researched and artfully written, Darts and Letters/Cited is essential to me: one good source of meaning and even help against overwhelming circumstance.

  • Incredible.

There is so much I appreciate about this podcast, but… I’m struggling with the background music.

So much so, that I’m not sure how much longer I can stay. It’s so pervasive that it distracts from the host and the stories, which so far have been fantastic. Very informative and interesting.

The Green Dragon: China’s Search for Ecological Civilization

The Green Dragon: China’s Search for Ecological Civilization
Q: What happens to the idea of ecological civilization under Xi Jinping?
Xi has elevated ecological civilization as a core party pursuit and introduced ideas such as natural accounting, but the transition remains largely top-down and lacks genuine public engagement.
The Green Dragon: China’s Search for Ecological Civilization
Q: What is ecological civilization and how is it distinct from other ideas like sustainable development?
Ecological civilization is framed as a civilizational survival issue, distinguishing itself from sustainable development by emphasizing fundamental changes to society and governance rather than just sustainable practices.
Future Ecologies Feedswap: FOREST / GARDEN
Q: How can permaculturists interact responsibly with indigenous communities?
Permaculturists should adopt the concept of two-eyed seeing, which encourages viewing the world through both indigenous and western perspectives, practicing humility and listening to local knowledge.
Episode #4: The Secret Life of Central Bankers
Q: How should they engage with this idea of economic expertise when the chair of the Fed is saying, well, we have to do this, otherwise we're going to get a recession?
Annalise Riles suggests questioning the stance of experts that state there’s no alternative; instead, one should explore alternatives that have been unfairly dismissed.
