  • A very insightful film podcast with two marvelous hosts. Having collaborated together on a review episode of the John Frankenheimer movie "Seconds", Justin and Laura were very engaging, keeping the flow of the discussion on with new and exciting questions regarding the film's themes and each of the participants' thoughts.

  • Great film podcast!

I really enjoy this one. The range of films they talk about and then give respect to each (most recently Hot tub Time Machine and further back Eyes Wide Shut to give a flavour of the range) feels unusual and refreshing for a film podcast. They always get good guests too adding something of themselves to the choice of film.

My favourite thing is how they get under the skin of a film and in particular the humanity of all the films. It’s not just a summary of what’s cool or bad

  • Best Philosophical Podcast in movies!!!

Found the podcast through Matthew Strohl. I immediately fell in love with it because of the philosophical approach to movies. Some of the podcasts made me so happy. Things I have been saying to friends about certain films like Starship Troopers. To hear similar opinions or points being made about films in the show made me very happy!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

151. Rec (w/ Pete Turner)
Q: What drew you to work on that particular genre or subgenre of horror in particular?
Pete shares that his interest began during his PhD, influenced by the 9/11 attacks and the rise of amateur video capturing disaster, leading him to explore the impact of found footage films.
146. In the Mouth of Madness (w/ Carly Severn)
Q: So when did you first see this movie In the Mouth of Madness? And what's your relationship to the film?
I must have been a teenager. This is what I refer to as one of my Trinitron classics because I grew up in a small village.
146. In the Mouth of Madness (w/ Carly Severn)
Q: Carly, first question to you on this movie, I think it has to be this question. Do you read Sutter Cane?
Of course I do. What if Charlton Heston says that he doesn't have the stomach for it, right?
144. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (w/ Abe Mathew)
Q: What's your history with le Carré and this novel in particular and then this film in particular?
Abe shares that he got into le Carré's works at a young age, starting with "The Spy Who Came In From the Cold" and later reading "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy". He found the latter a more challenging read due to its complexity but appreciated it once he revisited it.
133. Nickel Boys (w/ Bilge Ebiri)
Q: How do you feel about 2024 as a film year, Bilge?
It's weird because so much of the conversation around the year focuses on the box office, but by the end of the year, it wound up being actually pretty close to what we had last year, which was a very good year.
