  • Favourite new podcast

As a total animation and fantasy novice, having the opportunity to learn more about both from Fantasy/Animation has been such a treat! Equally entertaining as it is informative, I look forward to each episode on a weekly basis! My all time favourites tends to change as often as they come out but at the moment it’s (the current most recent) Spirited Away with Susan Napier. I could write another paragraph on the amazing guests alone..

Thank you to the team for such amazing and free content :)

  • Really insightful and fun!

Just started listening to this one last night after seeing Tom Sito (a future episode for here and a previous guest over on my podcast) post about this show. I figured if Tom gives these guys a thumbs up, it has to be good. After listening to the Gremlins episode I got to say this podcast is so fun and they bring a different aspect to the film and animation review genre. The banter that Chris and Alex have back and forth is worth the price of admission alone. If you are into pop culture then I t... more

  • A mixed bag

An interesting premise for a podcast that is unfortunately dragged down by the hosts. They are pretentious in the worst possible way, in that they treat their shallow, surface-level observations as profound revelations and deep analysis. As a listener you also get the distinct impression that you are being talked down and lectured to, rather than listening in on a friendly academic discussion. On the plus side, the guests are always a highlight and contribute a lot to the conversation with uniqu... more

  • Great Interviewers

Just listened to the “Treasure Planet” interview with Musker and Clements. Great questions and discussion, such wonderful insights, and genuine interest in all the pieces of the film making process. Will be tuning in for more!

  • What a podcast’

I entered into the podcast from the point of view of animation but have discovered many happy rabbit holes that cross all the boundaries.

They are gentle but yet rigorous dissections of a wide range of films and shows that make you want to rewatch them with a more educated view point.

Luckily I have so many to backtrack to.

My favourite? Whichever one I’ve just listened to (but Into the Spiderverse and Inception are pretty great).

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Kung Fu Panda (2008) (with John Yorke)
Q: Can you talk us through that opening sequence and how it fits with your structures?
The opening sequence is a ravishingly beautiful 2D animation that establishes the film's narrative, reflecting both excitement and cultural authenticity while connecting to Po's character.
Footnote #71 - Synthespians
Q: What should we know about the implications of AI and Synthespians in the context of labor in the film industry?
The conversation involves the marginalization of labor, questions of trust, exploitation, and how AI could change the landscape of acting and production.
Footnote #71 - Synthespians
Q: Is this an anxiety purely from a kind of actorly perspective of, oh my god, humans are being replaced on screen by things that are not on screen?
It concerns the shifting of labor rather than outright replacement, focusing on the broader implications for various types of industry workers, not just actors.
Lotus Lantern (1999) (with Muyang Zhuang)
Q: Could you just explain for those who know nothing about Lotus Lantern, what is it, what's the film, and why is it significant in the history of Chinese animation?
Lotus Lantern is based on traditional Chinese folklore about a half-god boy named Chen Xiang and explores themes of love and betrayal among deities and mortals. It's significant as one of the most commercially successful animated films during its time, demonstrating a shift towards modern animated styles while incorporating Chinese cultural narratives.
Tee Collins (with Robby Gilbert)
Q: What influenced Tee Collins' approach to animation?
Collins' approach was informed by his community work, the importance of education for black youth, and the cultural understanding of movement, aiming to challenge racial stereotypes in media.
