  • IDEAS is a fantastic podcast!

I’m a a CBC-phile for sure and the Ideas podcast is a favourite. When I’m not able to tune in live on a weekday day evening to CBC Radio One, I know I can always catch it here. I think that Ideas host, Nahlah Ayed, is one of our national treasures!!! Her recent series on “Revitalizing Democracy in Canada” should be required listening for every Canadian newcomer and every Canadian citizen. And I hope that our USA neighbours might find Ideas really good and important listening too!!

  • Highly recommend for your walks!

The shows are very well curated, edited and fact-checked and many of the documentaries translate academic ideas for a broad audience in an accessible way while being so interesting! Truly a Canadian classic! Thanks to the host Nahlah Ayed and all the producers, especially Nicola Luksic and Tom Howell, the producers of the series Ideas from the Trenches in the show :)

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

How music transports the Afghan diaspora to their homeland
Q: How did you get started? What is it that inspired you to start singing?
I was born into music; my mother said I sang from a very young age.
How guest-host power dynamics shape migration
Q: What do you think it would take to move away from conditional, transactional forms of hospitality in our own time?
The movement of human community in the modern world has generally been away from openness and towards closeness, and hospitality is key to fight against that, to recreate community.
Not a war story. This is about what comes after for veterans
Q: What kind of impact are you hoping that these interviews and the project as a whole will ultimately have?
I think there's a tendency to think that a conflict happens between this year and that year, and maybe we'll study that very narrow element, and then it's over. But it's not over for the veterans, it's not over for their loved ones.
Not a war story. This is about what comes after for veterans
Q: These were not typical veteran interviews. They were not purely about what they did during war. Your focus was on what happened after the war. Why?
I wanted to get at the history of the echoes of war and military service, those ripples of a war that continue to shape the lives of people for years and decades after.
How overlooked veterans make history in their own words
Q: What persuaded you that there is, in fact, a burden of expectation among these interviewees?
Veterans often respond to societal expectations and may omit uncomfortable emotions or experiences during interviews.
