Keeping it 101 is the podcast that helps our nerdy listeners make sense of religion. Why religion? Well, if you read the news, have a body, exist in public, or think about race, gender, class, ability, or sexuality, you likely also think about religion — even if you don’t know it yet. Let us show you why religion is both a lot more important and a little easier to understand than you might think. ... more

  • Happy this was assigned homework!

I’m taking a World Religions class in seminary and the professor assigned an early episode of this podcast. Wow, I’m so glad she did, it’s fantastic! I love the substance and honesty of the hosts, and am learning so much. I plan on listening to every episode when I can. Thanks for your labor (and humor).

  • At last!

I have been looking for a podcast like this for years. I don’t know why, when I’ve searched for religious studies and religious theory or any other search terms that I’ve tried, I never found this one. Or maybe it did come up but I overlooked it. But recently, I did a search for Hannah McGregor because I love and enjoy her and Marcel’s work on the podcast Witch Please and Material Girls, and I found this in my search results and I am so excited and so grateful to be listening. I, like, I assume,... more

Deeply Annoying. listen to this podcast, it’s better than a community college world religions class.

  • The best thing in the study of religion in a generation

This pod is central to my Theories in the Study of Religion course because it is such good pedagogy. But it is also so so good for non academic people who just want to know more. But it such a good idea place to go for joy in this crazy world. That is such a gift. Thank you.

You want to know what we want to hear on the pod: I want to hear the two of you rant on Love Jihad (and similar nonsense)+racialization of religious identity. Please???

Q: Why is religion important?
Religion shapes laws, schools, and healthcare access, and understanding it allows for better insight into social justice and rights movements.
CROSSOVER: Ten on Religion with Dr. Mark Banas
Q: What is the main takeaway that we can learn about religion from these examples?
The main argument of the book is that religion doesn't cause abuse; we tend to focus on abuse in fringe communities, which allows us to pretend it is rare and only caused by outsiders. Abuse happens everywhere.
CROSSOVER: Turn the Page with Jenn Jordan
Q: Can you begin to talk a little bit about why it is so important to understand religion even if you yourself are not religious?
Understanding religion is crucial because it permeates all aspects of society, laws, and cultural norms, and ignoring its impact can lead to significant societal blind spots.
CROSSOVER: Turn the Page with Jenn Jordan
Q: So, what was your journey to working on the stuff together?
Megan and Elise met during their PhD program at UNC Chapel Hill, quickly forming a collaborative partnership that has lasted for over a decade, during which they developed their podcast and wrote their book together.
CROSSOVER: Turn the Page with Jenn Jordan
Q: Could you both talk a little bit more about your particular areas of research and what you think that you bring to each other's works or perspective when you collaborate?
Megan specializes in religious intolerance and the impact of white supremacy, while Elise focuses on Islamic studies and how these issues intersect with global perspectives. Their collaboration allows them to bring both American and international insights into their analysis of religion's role in society.
