Brightline, the first private passenger train to open in the U.S. in more than a century, is hailed as a national model for the future of rail. Since 2018, Brightline has sold millions of train tickets in Florida, and now the company is expanding to the West Coast. Why are some railroad crossings more dangerous than others, according to federal data? Drivers who survived collisions with Brightline trains argue the infrastructure around the tracks put them in harm's way.
The tracks Brightline trains run on were already the deadliest stretch of railroad in the nation in the 1980s and 90s, according to federal data. Have local governments learned anything from that history?
Hear the stories of three people who lost their lives on the tracks, in the words of the loved ones they left behind.
Brightline hasn’t yet turned a profit — and it’s billions of dollars in debt.

Obey the laws and stay off the tracks. Even a fire truck driver thought they could go past the railroad crossing while the arms were down. You can’t rescue anyone if you’re dead. It’s that simple.

I feel like there is just so much more information that could’ve been divulged, more insight. I felt like it left me hanging at the end, unfinished. Maybe there could’ve been solutions, maybe there could be avenues for accountability.…
This is an in-depth piece on different aspects of Brightline. You have to listen to each and every episode to get a true sense of the whole story. I think this investigative journalism is well done.
Most Americans don’t truly understand true high-speed rail networks unless you’ve travelled to Europe or Asia where they exist and are highly functional (not always perfect but an asset to their people). The US has a long ways to go and it takes investment but it has to be done properly to make i... more

Florida resident here, people are here commenting strange things, indicating their assumption that there are poles/flashing lights everywhere a road crosses a train track, that’s simply not the case in Florida. Although there are many alert devices they aren’t at all intersections. Anyone who walks near EV cars knows they sneak up on you unless they have that fun high pitched Jetsons sound effect.

A comprehensive investigation into the Brightline train service, which has become infamous as the deadliest passenger train in the U.S. since its launch in 2018. The program exposes the discrepancies between the company's claims about fatalities and the underlying factors contributing to the deaths, including accidents and undetermined causes. With personal stories from victims' families and insights from experts, the narrative addresses the urgent need for improved safety measures and the implications of taxpayer funding for a private venture. Unique in its focus on the intersection of public safety and private enterprise, this inquiry raises critical questions about accountability and the future of rail transport in America.
