  • Decent, but far too many ads (>50% of play time)

I just finished listening to today’s 8 minute podcast. Approximately 4 minutes and 15 seconds of it was advertisements and that’s not including the necessary fluff and introductory stuff. This podcast is now literally more advertising than it is content, which is sad to see (since I’m sure it’s necessary now).

  • Good content, too many ads

I like the quick updates but the content to commercials ratio is off. It is a short podcast but often has 4-6 ads. I get you have to raise money but seems excessive.

  • Please stop with Morgan Stanley ads! They make this podcast unlistenable!

What it says on the title. The Thoughts on the Market podcast ad being vomited on repeat is incredibly annoying, and I really don’t know why Marketplace is regularly promoting a podcast with such a gratingly annoying voice. It’s already made me unsubscribe from Morning Report, and this is next if it keeps up. It’s amazing content once you get past the terrible ads but at a certain point, I can’t handle the constant skipping.

  • An orphaned podcast in Marketplace family

With a parade of hosts, lackluster stories—some with a 1.5 minute runtime—that didn’t make the flagship program, and three ad blocs (try listening a few episodes back-to-back and you will feel that you’re listening to the same ads over and over with some tiny reporting in between) this podcast is an afterthought among Marketplace leaders and staff. I wonder why I should treat any differently.

  • No Pro Trump Add

Love the show, but there was a pro-Trump ad. Don’t get it

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Using AI chatbots for mental health support poses serious risks for teens, report finds
Q: Do you think these tools can provide any emotional benefit outside of these more extreme cases?
The jury is still out, but there might be some support for adults; however, risks for anyone under 18 outweigh the benefits.
Using AI chatbots for mental health support poses serious risks for teens, report finds
Q: What did you find when you actually tested these systems? How well did those guardrails hold up?
The safety guardrails were effective in short interactions but tended to fail in multi-turn conversations, missing warning signs and offering inappropriate responses.
3D printing was supposed to disrupt prosthetic costs. It hasn’t.
Q: So what do you think would need to change in order for 3D printing to actually deliver on the promise of cheaper prosthetics?
The primary barrier is the legal definition of medical devices; redefining them could make these devices more accessible and potentially reduce costs.
3D printing was supposed to disrupt prosthetic costs. It hasn’t.
Q: So why hasn't this lowered costs?
The high costs in 3D printed prosthetics are driven by expensive professional equipment and maintenance, in addition to regulatory and insurance challenges that affect coverage for new technologies.
Have we given up on data privacy?
Q: What kind of reforms do you think would make the biggest difference now?
On one hand, we need robust federal data privacy laws, but we also need privacy tech companies that align with the public interest rather than just maximizing data collection.
