Episode 300 with John, Jonathan and Alex was excellent. Intelligent and scholarly without being pompous or elite.

  • Great content . Worst sound on the internet

This podcast has some really interesting episodes, some appear a few months after other podcasters have produced similar content.

The main issue is the sound quality is appalling, mostly recordings of telephone conversations or zoom calls … who knows. Up your game.

Although I listen regularly and enjoy these podcasts I wish Tom Thorpe would engage more with his guests. Always the same introduction and no responses from him to their answers. He almost seems disinterested.

  • A bit hit & miss

Some contributors are very knowledgeable, articulate & thoroughly worth listening to. Others I’m afraid are less so.

I appreciate that Tom Thorpe is based in Ulster but there is a bias towards having Irish contributors & Irish-centric topics far beyond what would be expected if the distribution of discussions represented the myriad of Great War subjects available.

Perhaps the podcast more represents the Western Front Association, somethings good, some mediocre & some occasionally poor & ill t... more

Ep375 – Burial of L-Cpl John Street – Mike Jackson
Q: How did your family memories or silences shape your desire to uncover what really happened?

Ep374 – Angel Down – Daniel Kraus
Q: What do you hope readers will take away from this story?
The wars never end and we collectively need to learn to walk away from a fight for the greater good, rather than always needing to be the winner.
Ep374 – Angel Down – Daniel Kraus
Q: What inspired you to take the choice of writing Angel Down as a single looping sentence?
I wanted to create the feeling of being in battle, where there's no time to breathe, mirroring the relentless nature of industrial warfare.
Ep374 – Angel Down – Daniel Kraus
Q: How does Angel Down engage with the tension between the perspectives that the Great War was a futile tragedy and something of a just cause?
On one level, it feels very anti-war, but I think ultimately, it is ambiguous. It explores not just how individuals would act in the face of war but examines deep questions about human nature.
