Love this podcast. The team did notttt like that Mastercard economist. I’ve never heard Marissa and Chris so silent on an episode.

  • Good podcast

Great podcast content, decent guests most of the time. But way too white; there’s a whole lot of white ignorance going on when discussing the intricacies of the economy for people of color and other minorities. Your recent guest, Heather Long, made a comment about having been to Americas “poorest white town”, as if people of color are not poorer in $ value and in numbers, and visiting the white poors somehow proves her generosity. Very strange wording and comes off as insensitive to the plights ... more

  • Hosts Should Be Prepared with Data

Normally I enjoy this podcast but the recent episode on the jobs recession was subpar. One of the hosts kept saying what she “thought” the data and when asked for more granularity on what little data she did have, a breakdown by race/education/etc, she couldn’t provide further details. If they’re going to discuss data on the podcast, then they should have all the data they’re going to discuss. Otherwise it’s just speculation which listeners could do on our own.

  • Always interesting

A favorite podcast! My professional life has nothing to do with economics but I am fascinated by this podcast. It’s a bit of a fact-based harbor in our current disinformation storm. And, the chit-chat acceptable.

Traditionally, the Fed chair has more sway due to their role in communicating with the marketplace, but every member has one vote, so structurally there's no difference in voting power.
No Con Job Friday
Q: Given that small businesses have been put through the wringer due to tariffs, is it possible that the jobless are not being reflected in UI claims due to the fact that many small business owners are self-employed and therefore likely ineligible for unemployment insurance?
Yes, it's reasonable to assume that's part of the situation, although the unwillingness to file and the reduction in benefits likely plays a bigger role.

Meyer discusses how inflation is shaping consumer behavior and spending trends, particularly in the holiday sales context.
