However, in not a small number of cases, the interview is almost entirely spent on details like how long a book took to write or details like research methods without talking about any key ideas. It’s also common to find guests who are activists before academics but that’s probably a reflection of academics more than this channel. The uncritical and uninteresting questions from ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Peter S. Goodman, "Davos Man: How the Billionaire Class Devoured Democracy" (Custom House, 2022)
Q: Can you talk about stakeholder capitalism and its significance to the Davos Man?
Stakeholder capitalism is presented as a kinder form of capitalism, but it often serves as a guise for protecting the interests of the wealthy while neglecting real democratic engagement and accountability.
Peter S. Goodman, "Davos Man: How the Billionaire Class Devoured Democracy" (Custom House, 2022)
Q: Why did you call your book Davos Man and what is a Davos Man?
Davos Man refers to a specific subset of billionaires who attend the World Economic Forum and promote the idea that their success equates to the success of society as a whole, often ignoring the reality of wealth inequality.
Nathan Munier, "Zimbabwe's Diamond Trade: The State, Resource Politics and Development" (Cambridge UP, 2025)
Q: To what extent is what you've described about Zimbabwe's diamond sector similar to other countries in Southern Africa?
Zimbabwe's dynamics are somewhat mirrored in other countries within the region, where political stability is linked to resource management and trade, particularly in the diamond sector.
Nathan Munier, "Zimbabwe's Diamond Trade: The State, Resource Politics and Development" (Cambridge UP, 2025)
Q: How, for example, has Zanu-Pf's dominance of the diamond trade influenced their ability to dominate in terms of domestic politics too?
Zanu-Pf maintained significant control over the diamond sector, ultimately allowing them to dominate domestic politics despite the formation of a government of national unity with the MDC.
Nathan Munier, "Zimbabwe's Diamond Trade: The State, Resource Politics and Development" (Cambridge UP, 2025)
Q: What does that look like if we sort of zoom out? Like who is owning this diamond wealth?
The ownership structure in the diamond trade has changed repeatedly, reflecting the competition among different factions within Zanu-Pf for control over resources.
