Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Betto van Waarden, "Politicians and Mass Media in the Age of Empire" (Cambridge UP, 2025)
Q: Can you tell us a bit about that process for you, of how you went from this initial interest and what sorts of more specific questions you ended up with in the book?
I actually tried to keep the question broad to see a lot of dynamics. I focused on how politicians tried to shape the media, and how media tried to shape politics, which created a new system of media politics.
Betto van Waarden, "Politicians and Mass Media in the Age of Empire" (Cambridge UP, 2025)
Q: Could you tell us a bit about yourself and why you decided to write this book?
I'm a professor of history at Maasrecht University in the Netherlands. I'm currently working in a national research program on disinformation and democracy, initiated by the Dutch government. I was very interested to understand the history of the relationship between media and politics and how it evolved over time.
Brooke Kroeger, "Undaunted: How Women Changed American Journalism" (Knopf, 2023)
Q: Did you have an audience in mind that you wanted to reach with your story?
In my mind's eye is women like me who've been through this and young women coming up, because I think this book is full of subliminal career advice.
Brooke Kroeger, "Undaunted: How Women Changed American Journalism" (Knopf, 2023)
Q: So how did women change American journalism?
In various ways, they introduce diversity which changes things because another set of eyes is on things. We see this in various ways.
Brooke Kroeger, "Undaunted: How Women Changed American Journalism" (Knopf, 2023)
Q: So how did you just...
I was asked to write this book. So it was not my idea, it came from the editor, a gentleman, older than I am, if you can imagine.
