  • Best VGM podcast!

The Bruggemann Bros. know video game music. Thoughtful discussion about all aspects of VGM music from the technical (I know what PSG channels and FM synths are now!) to basics about why the music works with the game being discussed. You don’t have to be a musician or know anything about music to enjoy this podcast. Thanks guys!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Rebroadcast: David Wise
Q: How can aspiring video game composers break into the industry?
The good thing now is there are lots of opportunities for doing scores for indie games. I think that's really what's going to revitalize the game industry.
Rebroadcast: David Wise
Q: Your music is frequently praised for being atmospheric and for heightening the integration between music and sound. What is your writing process?
I don't have a preconceived idea of what I'm going to do. I just get down and look at the visuals and do what comes naturally, really.
Rebroadcast: David Wise
Q: How did you get the job at Rare?
I was working at a music shop in a city called Leicester in the UK. It's very central. Two men walked in off the street... and he offered me a job there and then.
Rebroadcast: David Wise
Q: What does that series mean to you, and how does it feel finally coming back to the musical world of Donkey Kong?
It's great. It's good to be back. I think one of the things that I missed at Rare when we got taken over by Microsoft was the fact that we probably never do a big title like Donkey Kong Country again.
Rebroadcast: David Wise
Q: Could you talk a little bit about your approach to scoring video games, and whether or not that has changed over the years?
I don't think I have a formula, really. If somebody gives me a level to look at, I'll take a look at it and get a few ideas and start putting a few ideas down, and then send it back for them for some further comment.
