  • Illuminating and Fascinating

I learned so many things from Pete Brown’s interview. The history of the working men’s club was really worth knowing about, exactly the intention of this podcast. Even though I live in Canada, this podcast made me want to travel to Norwich, visit Burton-on-Trent, and drink Perry. Many episodes are highly engaging, but Brown’s humanistic interests made this one very touching.

  • Enriching and Expanding

The concept of this show is deceptively simple, but brilliantly effective because everything mentioned is already curated by the guests. It has brought so many writers, performers, and places to my attention that I would not have known about otherwise. Always interesting.

  • Inspired Idea

This is such a good idea for a podcast. The host handles things excellently. It works best when the guests choose six disparate items from across their range of interests. A few guests have chosen to talk about one theme in six ways and these episodes are less interesting. I have followed up so many items as a result of listening.

Brooke Newman
Q: What are some of the limitations you've come across when you've been to an archive?
Historians can hit walls when searching for specific financial records or detailed accounts of historical transactions, as many records have been lost or are incomplete.
Brooke Newman
Q: What is the difference between historians and journalists?
Both are interested in telling true stories based on evidence, but historians work with older evidence, which varies greatly in availability and quality, leading to longer and more complex research processes.
Stuart Jeffries
Q: So, what actually is the prostate? Why is it important in the body?
Well, it turns out, who knew? I mean, probably lots of people... it's vital for producing a sort of fluid that can speed your, sometimes it helps you fertilise the egg.
Stuart Jeffries
Q: So, your next choice is how Donald Trump is more stupid than he thinks he is.
Yeah, but again, it might be a useful skill to have, nonetheless, you know.
Stuart Jeffries
Q: So, your second choice is on exactly that topic, which is this idea that IQ tests are terrible for establishing a person's stupidity or intelligence.
Really interesting. It was a French psychologist called Alfred Binet, who in 1904 was commissioned by the French government to try and help kids who were struggling at school.
