Hot Seat #5 - Math Identity?
Q: What does it look like to you about things like math identity and how do we keep high expectations?
We still want students to reach grade level expectations, but we need to encourage multiple approaches to get there.
Hot Seat #5 - Math Identity?
Q: What advice do you have for teachers or admin who are feeling some pushback against anything that's not the content only?
Promote a positive classroom culture where students want to figure things out and understand that math identity development is beneficial for all students.
Debate 37 - Dump the Algorithms?
Q: Vanessa, what advice do you have for teachers to help students enjoy working with algorithms?
Encourage students to use the algorithms, then explore why they work to build confidence and foster curiosity in math.
Debate 37 - Dump the Algorithms?
Q: So for you, Pam, thinking about state standards or district expectations, what advice do you have for teachers in a strict system where they must teach a certain algorithm?
Focus on building students' mathematical connections throughout the year, so they can naturally lead to understanding the traditional algorithm as a tool rather than just memorizing it.
Debate 37 - Dump the Algorithms?
Q: So thinking about like students, sometimes students thrive with some structure, and they want to know what the end goal is, how do we make that clear if we're just letting them openly play?
It's important to have specific goals and structure that students understand, allowing them to feel safe and ultimately ignite their curiosity.
