Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Alsu Kurmasheva, Former Political Prisoner, "Sometimes in prison, the only thing I could control was my breath."
Q: Could you talk a little bit more about what this book symbolized for you while you were in prison?
The Unbearable Lightness of Being helped me find comfort in discomfort and understand the nature of compassion, which resonated deeply during my trial and imprisonment.
Alsu Kurmasheva, Former Political Prisoner, "Sometimes in prison, the only thing I could control was my breath."
Q: I know that something important for you in prison as it was outside of the bars was running.
Running became a way for me to regain some control and sense of freedom. I improvised shoelaces from a COVID mask and found moments of joy and resistance in my daily runs.
Alsu Kurmasheva, Former Political Prisoner, "Sometimes in prison, the only thing I could control was my breath."
Q: So talk to me a little bit more about the conditions. I know that in our previous conversation when you came to CIEE and talked a little bit more in depth about your time being in prison, you talked about how the conditions in prison almost stripped you of your humanity, they make you feel like you are not human.
The conditions were horrific, with interrogations and severe lack of comfort meant to strip away dignity. I struggled to maintain my sense of self in such a dehumanizing environment.
Alsu Kurmasheva, Former Political Prisoner, "Sometimes in prison, the only thing I could control was my breath."
Q: Can you tell me a little bit about your experience with reporting on that war? Why did you choose that conflict?
I reported on various subjects, but when Russia invaded Ukraine, I felt compelled to focus on the war as it directly affected my audience and was a topic that Russian authorities were trying to suppress.
Ankit Jain, D.C. Shadow Senator, "We fought a revolution to prevent this”
Q: What needs to be done to make DC more affordable for students?
The federal government should allow local regulations to replace outdated height restrictions on buildings to enable more affordable housing.
