在蒙特梭利理論中，有一個使蒙特梭利教育與傳統教育有所區別的核心概念，它被稱為「黃金三角」(Smith et al., 2018)。傳統教育中常見的一種觀念是：成人（或教師）是擁有大量知識的人。他們是教育中的主角，因為他們要負責把這些知識全部傳遞給孩子。孩子則被看作是一個，準備好去吸收成人所知道的「空容器」。
然而，在蒙特梭利的模式中，成人與孩子之間有著截然不同的關係──成人與孩子都是學習者。成人與孩子之間的關係是雙向的，孩子從成人身上學到的並不少於成人從孩子身上學到的。
