It‘s so nice to think, ah I would like to learn more about a certain farming or gardening skill in detail, and be able to find a beyond-surface-introduction podcast for it. Twice when I‘ve searched for the obsession of the day this podcast has shown up! And it has not disappointed. I really enjoy the density of information and if I manage to do some successful grafting it will be to your credit. Thanks for your work, you can tell you‘re really obsessed with it and that‘s awesome.

Hard to overemphasize how much I learn from every episode of this. It’s been a big inspiration for my own gardening. Love being able to go so in depth on other people’s experiences. Thanks Aaron and Tim for bringing in such awesome guests and bringing your own knowledge to the table.

  • Informative, irreverent, slow-paced (rewards patience, like a perennial.

I really enjoy the single-genus focus of this podcast series. The guests are truly experts, and still usually learn something from Aaron. There’s a serendipity to the conversational format. Even if it does sometimes seems like eavesdropping on nerds, there’s usually a reward — whether on the topical species or down a tangential rabbit hole, or, more likely, both. And, the format is explicitly meant to be useful — there’s some history, some politics, a lot of passion, but far more praxis than pro... more

Teaching Kids About Plants
Q: What recommendations do you have for a beginner gardener starting a raised bed?
Start with two raised beds, one for perennials and one for annuals, and use local materials like rough cut lumber. Fill the beds with organic debris and finished compost, and choose plants that you enjoy eating and that grow well in your local climate.
Repodcast: Solecast: Food Forestry & Perennial Vegetables w/ Aaron Parker of Edgewood Nursery
Q: Can you explain why you prefer food forestry to other methods? Does it feed your family?
I prefer food forestry because it's more diverse and unusual, easier to grow perennials, and it does feed my family, although my kid is less excited about the flavors.
String and Traps
Q: Do you have any advice on approaches to sourcing uncommon and interesting plants?
Learn to grow from seed, as it provides access to a wider variety of species and is usually cheaper than purchasing nursery stock.
Favorite Plants with Linda Black Elk
Q: If people would like to follow your work, what's a good place for people to find you?
You can find me, Linda Black Elk, on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok.
Problems with Permaculture / Implications of Hybridization
Q: How do natural hybrids form and how are they maintained in cultivation?
Natural hybrids tend to form between closely related species that share overlapping habitats and are maintained through vegetative propagation tactics in cultivation.
