It was more about people's understanding of the regime and how to navigate it rather than institutions facilitating that creativity; Stiliagi had to find places to express themselves away from the scrutiny of authorities.

Q: What made you turn toward the Stiliagi as a topic?

I started thinking about countercultures, alternative cultures, and youth subcultures because of the intense shortage of materials in the Soviet Union and how individuals constructed their identities.
