  • Love it!

I just discovered The Book Show and am enjoying it so much! I love hearing some of my favorite authors like Billy Collins (the definition of poetry is awesome), Kaveh Akbar (I'm a huge fan!), and Scott Turow (who knew he had a Chicago or Michigan accent (I think)? Looking forward to catching up! (PS - Joe Donahue sounds like David Letterman, right?!)

The Book Show | Michael Connelly - The Proving Ground
Q: How much of that research do you want to do in going into it? And how much do you want imagination to take over as well?
I do like going into a courtroom and observing, but I also like my imagination to fly.
The Book Show | Michael Connelly - The Proving Ground
Q: What has it been like to see the transformation of this character, especially from that first novel?
It's fun, I think he's evolved through every one of the eight books about him, seeking a higher meaning in his life.
The Book Show | John Iriving - Queen Esther
Q: Is part of the baseline to write a novel that looked at Judaism, that looked at Jewish individuals at this time, and especially as we continue to have these very relevant conversations now?
Yes, Irving aimed for historical accuracy and to evoke empathy for Jewish experiences during the time the novel is set.
The Book Show | John Iriving - Queen Esther
Q: How do you look at it when readers make those comparisons?
He enjoys these comparisons and sees them as part of his narrative style, acknowledging the thematic repetition in his works.
The Book Show | John Iriving - Queen Esther
Q: At what point did that come into your mind?
Irving explains that his novels often start with the ending and he visualizes the complete arc, including character backgrounds, before figuring out the beginning.
