  • Educational, Inspirational, and Fun for Old House Lovers

Stacy and Daniel do such great job in creating this happy place in the podcast world to deep dive into the Old House realm. I listen to gather info for a future when I might have the chance to work on my own old house (something older than my current 1960’s house), and the resources and personal advice they provide are impeccable. So thankful they create this resource!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

172: To the Shire Born - DIY on a Grand Scale
Q: Is your house haunted?
No, the house has a nice vibe, and people who visit don't sense anything unusual.
164: Demystifying Linseed Paint (Again!)
Q: What is the risk of spontaneous combustion with oil-based rags?
Only rags thoroughly soaked in oil present a risk of spontaneous combustion, while dry painted surfaces pose no danger.
164: Demystifying Linseed Paint (Again!)
Q: Can you use linseed paint on non-linseed putty glaze?
Yes, as long as the putty is fully cured and there are no chemical reactions involved.
164: Demystifying Linseed Paint (Again!)
Q: How often does exterior linseed paint need to be touched up or re-coated?
On a north-facing facade, expect to re-coat every 12-15 years; on south-facing facades with more UV exposure, the maintenance cycle might be every 2-3 years if kept well.
164: Demystifying Linseed Paint (Again!)
Q: Do you need to scrape your existing paint down to bare wood before applying linseed paint?
Not necessarily; linseed paint can penetrate existing linseed paint layers as long as they are not film-forming petrochemical finishes.
